What they do

EISMEA is the executive arm of the European Commission responsible for implementing the European Innovation Council (EIC). It acts as Europe's most active deep-tech investor, designed to bridge the "valley of death" for high-risk, science-based startups that private capital is not yet ready to support. While EISMEA handles the rigorous evaluation and grant management, the EIC Fund executes the equity component, taking direct ownership stakes in companies. The agency is unique in its "blended finance" approach, offering non-dilutive grants alongside patient equity capital to crowd in private investors. It focuses exclusively on creating new markets and disrupting existing ones through scientific and technological breakthroughs.

What they look for

The EIC targets "Deep Tech"-breakthrough innovations based on scientific discovery or meaningful engineering challenges. They look for high-risk, high-impact companies that have the potential to create new markets or disrupt existing ones but are too capital-intensive or risky for traditional VCs alone.
