TL;DR

  • Who actually writes first cheques here? Basis Set, Gradient, Pear VC and South Park Commons each led or co-led a seed round in the past year, and Conviction says it likes to invest early and is often the first investor. All five have a dated Bay Area AI deal since October 2025.
  • How big are the cheques? Published ranges run from a few hundred thousand dollars up to $25m, with Basis Set publishing $1m to $3m for a lead or co-lead position and South Park Commons $1m to $10m.
  • Is there fresh money in the market? Yes. Four of the five announced a new fund between January and October 2026, together worth more than $1.3bn.

Also worth knowing

Four more Bay Area firms are worth knowing about. Amplify Partners works from Menlo Park and San Francisco and calls itself the first investor for technical founders, and it announced an investment in Superlogical on 29 July 2026. Afore Capital backs pre-traction, pre-everything companies at pre-seed, with cheques of $500k to $2m and more from a $500m fund. Zetta sits at 168 South Park in San Francisco and offers day zero capital for AI in science. AIX Ventures describes itself as an AI-focused fund built for and by the industry.

Other support in the region

South Park Commons has offered $200k on an uncapped SAFE plus $500k in credits to a small group of people working inside its residency, posted on 14 October 2026 with no stated deadline. Basis Set ran its AI Fellowship in San Francisco from mid-June to early September 2026, with applications having closed on 8 May 2026, and fellows who go on to start a company can apply to the Basis Set Fellows Fund for pre-seed funding. Conviction lists a grant programme called Embed and a fellowship called Commit on its site.

FAQ

Which Bay Area investors back AI and nothing else?

Conviction says it backs AI-native "Software 3.0" companies, Basis Set calls itself an AI-native venture fund, and Gradient's own site describes it as the seed fund designed for founders in AI. Pear VC and South Park Commons both invest beyond AI, although most of the deals in their recent updates are AI companies.

I am pre-seed with a research prototype and no revenue. Where should I start?

South Park Commons is built around people who are earlier than a company, and its residency offer is aimed at exactly that stage. PearX takes founders through a 12-week programme and invests as much as $2m. Basis Set states that it invests from pre-seed and that cheques start in the hundreds of thousands.

How were these investors chosen?

Each one has a dated Bay Area AI deal since October 2024, a new investment since April 2025, and either a stated stage range covering pre-seed, seed or Series A or a dated deal at one of those stages. The Bay Area here means San Francisco and the counties around the bay, including San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda and Marin, so Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Mountain View, San Jose, Oakland, Berkeley and San Carlos are all inside it, while Sacramento is outside it. The guide uses that definition rather than the San Francisco city boundary, because Sand Hill Road is in Menlo Park and a city boundary would leave out a large share of the funds that lead first rounds. Company locations come from SEC Form D filings where one exists, or from Y Combinator's company directory where no filing exists. Far more than five investors clear those tests here, so the five on this page were picked for how useful they are to a founder raising a first round, and the other names left out for space are recorded in the research notes.
