Media investors
Media investors back companies in entertainment, publishing, games, creator tools and the businesses that compete for attention and sell it on. The sector has changed shape more than most in the last two decades, and the firms that still invest in it have specific views on what works.
The firms on this list name media or entertainment as a focus on their own website. Each cites its own site as the source for what is written here.

What media investors look for
An audience the company owns.
Direct relationships with users or subscribers, rather than reach borrowed from a platform that can change its rules. Investors ask how much of the audience the company can contact without an intermediary.
Revenue beyond advertising.
Subscriptions, transactions, licensing, tools. Advertising revenue is accepted and rarely enough on its own, because it is cyclical and concentrated in a few platforms.
Repeatable content economics.
Whether the cost of producing content falls relative to the revenue it earns as the company grows, or whether every unit costs the same. Technology companies scale. Studios often do not.
A product, where there is one.
Media investors are drawn to companies where technology changes how content is made, found or paid for, because those companies have margins that content alone does not.
Founders who understand distribution.
Where the audience comes from and what it costs. The investors in this sector have seen excellent content reach no one.
Raising in media
Fewer venture firms back media than once did, and those that do are precise about which models they fund. Founders should read the firm's stated focus closely: many mean creator tools and games rather than content businesses.
Have ready: audience data with the share the company reaches directly, revenue by type, retention or repeat by cohort, the cost of producing content relative to what it earns, and any platform dependence with the terms that govern it.
Strategic investors from studios, publishers and platforms are active in the sector, and their money often comes with distribution. It can also limit the company's options, which venture investors will ask about.
Questions
Do venture investors fund content companies?
Some do, where the content is a route to a product, a subscription base or a technology. A studio that makes content and sells it is more often funded by other kinds of capital.
Are games included in media investing?
Usually. Games are the largest part of entertainment by revenue and many firms on this list name them. Some specialise in games entirely.
What is the creator economy and do investors still back it?
Tools, platforms and financial products for people who make content independently. Investors continue to back the tools and infrastructure, and are more cautious about platforms that depend on a few large creators.
How do investors think about platform risk in media?
As the main risk. A company whose audience lives on a platform it does not control can lose that audience to a policy change. Investors want to see direct relationships being built.
Is advertising revenue a problem for raising?
It is accepted as one line and rarely as the only one. Investors want to see other revenue growing alongside it.
