Consumer investors
Consumer investors back companies that sell to people: brands, apps, marketplaces, subscriptions and the services around them. Distribution is the central question. A consumer product can be excellent and still fail to reach anyone at a cost the business can afford.
The firms on this list name consumer or retail as a focus on their own website. Each cites its own site as the source for what is written here.

What consumer investors look for
Organic demand.
Growth that comes from word of mouth, search or sharing rather than paid channels. Investors read the share of new customers that arrive unpaid as a measure of how much people want the product.
Retention and repeat.
Whether customers come back, and how often. For a brand that is repeat purchase rate. For an app it is retention by cohort. Either way it is the number that decides the business.
Contribution margin.
What is left after the product is made, shipped and sold. A consumer company that loses money on each sale needs a clear story for when that changes.
A brand people describe.
Investors look for evidence that customers can say what the product is and why it is different, in their own words. Reviews, community and press all count.
A founder who understands the customer.
Consumer investors often back founders who are the customer, or who have spent years selling to them. Taste and instinct matter here in a way that is hard to fake.
Raising in consumer
Consumer rounds move on evidence of demand. A company with organic growth and strong repeat rates can raise quickly. A company that depends on paid acquisition faces harder questions, because investors have watched that model fail many times.
Have ready: cohort retention or repeat rates, the share of growth that is organic, contribution margin by product, customer acquisition cost by channel, and the inventory or supply position where there is physical product.
Fewer funds back consumer than backed it a decade ago, and the ones that remain are selective. The filters on this page find the firms that still state the sector as a focus.
Questions
Do investors still fund consumer companies?
Yes, though fewer than before. The firms that do look hard at organic growth and margin. The list on this page includes only firms that state consumer as a focus on their own site.
What is a good retention rate for a consumer app?
It varies by category. Investors compare against products in the same category rather than against a single number, and look at the shape of the retention curve over months.
How do investors think about paid marketing?
As a way to accelerate demand that already exists. A business built entirely on paid channels is judged on payback and on what happens when the channel gets more expensive.
Are consumer brands fundable by venture?
Some are, where the margin and the growth support a venture outcome. Many brands are better funded by other kinds of capital, and consumer investors will say which they think a company is.
What is the difference between consumer and marketplace investing?
Marketplaces have two sides to acquire and a take rate in between. Many consumer investors also back marketplaces, and the marketplace investors page covers what is specific to them.
