Series A investors

PRE-SEEDSEEDSERIES ASERIES B+

A Series A funds a company that has found something that works and needs money to do more of it. There is revenue or usage that has grown for a sustained period, a way of acquiring customers that the team understands, and a plan to build the organisation around it. The round pays for the people and the reach that turn a working motion into a business.

The firms on this list lead or join Series A rounds as a stated part of their strategy. Most are institutional venture funds with the reserves to follow their investment through later rounds. Each cites its own website as the source for what is written here.

What Series A investors look for

Growth that has held up.

A sustained trend in revenue, usage or both. Investors at this stage read the shape of the curve and the months behind it, and a single strong quarter does less than several ordinary ones in a row.

A repeatable way of winning customers.

The team can say where customers come from, what each one costs to win, and what each one is worth. The numbers need not be perfect. They need to exist and to be understood.

Retention.

Customers who stay and use more over time are the clearest sign that the product works. Churn is the first thing a Series A investor will ask about and the hardest thing to explain away.

A team ready to hire.

The round builds an organisation. Investors want founders who know which roles come next, and who have shown they can attract people better than themselves.

A path to the next round.

A Series A investor is already modelling the Series B. The plan should show the milestones that make the next raise straightforward, and the money to reach them with margin.

How a Series A raise usually runs

Series A rounds are almost always led. One firm sets the price, takes the largest share and usually a board seat. Existing seed investors often take part on the same terms. The lead is the decision that matters, and the rest of the round tends to follow it.

Have ready before the first conversation: a full data room with the metrics behind every claim, a financial model, a hiring plan, and a clear account of the market and the competition. Investors at this stage will test each of these, and a gap found in diligence costs more than a gap disclosed up front.

The process is longer than at seed. Expect several meetings with the deal partner, a session with the wider partnership, reference calls with customers, and detailed diligence on the numbers before a term sheet. Running the conversations in parallel keeps the timeline in the founder's hands.

Questions

What is a Series A?

The first large institutional round, raised once a company has evidence that its product and its way of reaching customers both work. It is usually priced, usually led by one firm, and usually comes with a board seat.

How much traction do I need for a Series A?

Enough to show a trend an investor can extend. The specific level depends on the sector and the market. A software company is judged on revenue and retention, a hardware or life sciences company on milestones. The firms on this list describe their own bar on their sites.

Should my seed investors join the Series A?

Usually yes, if they have the reserves. A seed investor taking their full allocation in the next round is a signal that new investors read closely, and one declining to is a signal too.

What does a Series A board seat mean?

The lead investor joins the board and takes part in the major decisions, including future fundraising, senior hires and any sale. Choosing the lead is choosing that person for years.

How long does a Series A take?

From first meeting to money in the bank, a few months is common. Founders who begin building relationships with investors well before they need the money tend to raise faster when they do.
